RAR files are an archive file format similar to ZIP files. The main difference is that they offer significantly better compression as well as supporting multi-part files--that is, splitting contents across several RAR files in order to make the download more manageable.
The 'missing files' error means that Kontakt can't find the samples. Double-check to make sure the 'Samples' subfolder for the sample library is located within the main folder for the sample library. If it ended up in a different folder, you'll need to move the folder back where it belongs. Be sure to refer to the installation instructions included in the User's Guide PDF manual for detailed step-by-step instructions on how to install and load the sample library.
The first thing to do is to load the Native Instruments Service Center and ensure that your copy of Kontakt is authorized. Also, certain Orange Tree Sample libraries require the full version of Kontakt and are not compatible with the free Kontakt Player. The Kontakt Player can only load non-Kontakt Player libraries in a time-limited demo mode. Whether or not the sample library requires the full version of Kontakt is indicated in the product requirements in the product page.
The minimum system requirements for each sample library is listed on the product pages on this website. In general, you will need at Mac OS X 10.6.8 / Windows 7 or greater, with at least 2 GB of RAM for our Kontakt 4 compatible libraries, but our Kontakt 5 and Kontakt Player libraries require a newer version of Mac OS.

To load a sample library in Kontakt, click the 'Files' button located in the top center of Kontakt's interface, and then click the 'Load' option, which opens a dialog box to navigate to the patch you want to load.

Another option is to drag the Kontakt patch from Finder or Windows Explorer directly into Kontakt's window.

If the sample library is a Kontakt Player instrument, you can add the instrument to your 'Libraries' tab in Kontakt, which is a convenient way to access your instruments at any time.

Finally, if the sample library isn't a Kontakt Player instrument, the Quick Load feature is a great alternative, allowing you to organize your sample libraries all in one easily accessible place.

Only Kontakt Player libraries can be added to the 'Libraries' tab. To do this, click on the 'Add Library' button and then navigate to the sample library's folder and click the 'Choose' button. After adding the sample library to your 'Libraries' tab, you can also activate it, which will open the Native Instruments Service Center. The sample library will only be able to run in a time-limited demo mode until it has been activated in the Service Center.

This does not apply to non-Kontakt Player instruments, which cannot be added to Kontakt's 'Libraries' tab.

Absolutely! As long as you aren't reselling the samples themselves, you are free to use the sample libraries in any commercial works, including library music, TV, film, albums, etc.
You are allowed to install the libraries on multiple computers provided that they are solely for your own use. Kontakt Player instruments that require authorization within the Native Instruments Service Center are subject to limitations for how many installations your serial key can have.
We allow license transfers through our automated license transfer system (which is accessible from your account), but with a few limitations. Kontakt Player products, NFR (not for resale) copies, and discontinued libraries cannot be transferred. There are also limits on how often you can transfer libraries.
Refunds are only allowed for sample libraries purchased within 30 days that have not been downloaded. After 30 days or on downloading the sample library, your order is no longer refundable. You can read our full refund policy here.
